In this second quarter, the financial report of Portal Mãe Mirra reflects an important achievement: the arrival of funds for the project "Caring for bodies and the land, cultivating Life: Regeneration, Education and Sustainable Tourism with family farmers in the Cocoa Territory of southern Bahia", selected in the Teia da Sociobiodiversidade call for proposals from the Casa Socioambiental Fund.
Through nature-based solutions, agroecological practices, educational actions, and sustainable ecotourism, the initiative is committed to implementing or enriching 0.5 hectares of Agroforestry Systems (SAFs) and diversified community gardens, strengthening food security and local climate resilience; valuing Afro-Indigenous knowledge and integrating it with contemporary science, promoting training that includes children, young people, and women who are seed guardians; and boosting community-based ecotourism, adding value to local products and experiences, contributing to income generation and biodiversity conservation.
With the project funding, a 12-month agroecology consulting program was initiated in June to implement agroforestry systems (SAFs) at the Community Center, the Domingos Correia Rural School, and three farming families in the Pé de Serra/Parque do Conduru region. We also installed a traditional mill, which will benefit at least seven families, adding value to local products (flours, cocoa derivatives, tubers). These costs comprise the "Community Support Expenses." Also within the context of the project, for the first time it was possible to remunerate the functions of Agroecology Coordination and Financial Management (which had always been performed on a voluntary basis) – hence the inclusion of the "Human Resources" category in our balance sheet.
Our actions aim to create a fertile environment where sustainable agricultural practices and the transmission of ancestral knowledge go hand in hand, ensuring that the community becomes the protagonist of its own development. At the same time, we hope to provide enriching experiences for visitors, reinforcing the image of the territory as a sustainable and culturally vibrant destination.
