The project “Celebrating well-being using astronomy – Caring for the Body, the Earth and Planet Earth” was submitted in 2024 to the OAD’s annual call for proposals, which uses astronomy as a tool to promote sustainable development. It was evaluated by a panel of international experts appointed by the IAU, who approved its inclusion in the OAD’s List of Recommended Projects.
The recommended list is prepared annually by the OAD to support highly rated proposals that do not receive direct funding from the OAD.
This proposal, led by the Portal Mãe Mirra Community Center in partnership with the Astronomical Observatory of UESC (State University of Santa Cruz), uses astronomy to promote unity and interconnectedness on the planet.
The program integrates environmental education, hands-on activities in sustainable food production, food security, nutritional education, harvesting from home gardens, meal preparation, concentration practices through natural breathing, sky observation, understanding the solar and lunar impacts on agriculture, encounters with the stars, and exploration of technologies developed by ancestors.
