Community Engagement and Education: Integration of Ancestral Knowledge and Modern Science

Inspired by Rural Pedagogy, Educação Integral Proposto pela Mirra Alfassa, Pedagogia do exemplo e pelas ideias de Paulo Freire and from Grio Pedagogythis project at the rural school Domingos Correia seeks to promote education as a path for social and environmental transformation. By integrating learning with practice and valuing ancestral and community knowledge, we recognize education as a collective and emancipatory process. The project Caring for the Body, the Earth, and the Planet Earth reflects the essence of this approach, where we learn from our territory, honoring life and diversity, and understanding our Common Unity.

In this learning space, knowledge is not just something that comes from the outside, but a collaborative construction born from experience and dialogue. The land, the trees, and sustainable practices become an essential part of the curriculum, helping to restore ecological balance and community dignity. As Freire proposes, knowledge is liberating when it connects the individual to the world, promoting an education rooted in the reality of the countryside, yet with an eye toward the future.

This project celebrates the interdependence between the body, the environment, and the community, addressing issues such as sustainabilty, regenerative agriculture and the fundamental role of nature in our physical and emotional health. Through these workshops, we make visible the interconnection between all beings and the abundance that arises when we care for the earth, our bodies, and Planet Earth as a whole.

During our last workshop, we started with exercises that helped release the body and mind, allowing us to dive into working with emotions, learning to interpret them and connect them with our surroundings. Then, we explored the role of trees within the ecosystem, sparking a reflection on the interconnectedness of life.

Monoculture farming often teaches us to focus only on what we want to harvest, ignoring what is removed from the system in terms of biodiversity and ecological balance. By prioritizing a single plant species, we attempt to minimize the amount of life around it, as if everything that is not directly productive is an obstacle to agricultural success. This limited view makes us see the soil merely as a support for production, forgetting that, in fact, it is a living organism capable of sustaining a multitude of life forms that collaborate with each other.

On the other hand, when we talk about abundance and honoring Life, we begin to see the system as a whole, increasing the amount of life in each place and recognizing its diversity. Trees, for example, offer us much more than just fruit or wood. They provide us with valuable resins, create shade that cools the soil, and protect the soil from erosion. Additionally, they help retain moisture, purify the air, and are home to countless species, sustaining an entire network of life.

These functions, often overlooked by the logic of monoculture, show us the true abundance that arises from collaboration with nature, not from its exploitation. By seeing trees in their entirety, we understand that honoring Life means promoting a sustainable balance, where the soil, plants, animals, and we ourselves coexist harmoniously.

Thus, by caring for the body, the Earth, and the Planet, we are also caring for Life in all its forms, recognizing the interdependence between us and nature, and promoting the true abundance that arises from the connection with the Whole.
